To avoid this I changed template/pdp/product/iframe_wrapper.phtml to have these lines and logic first:

$pdpDesignInfo = $this->getPdpDesignInfo();
if ($pdpDesignInfo['extra_options'] === '') {
exit;
}

This way no overhead and no JavaScript errors occur on product pages without designer.
